WEEKLY DEVOTION WITH MUGISA ABWOOLI: THE EXTENT OF FAITH

 THE WEEK OF MONDAY 15TH TO SUNDAY 21ST JANUARY 2024

Luke 5:4-11

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Today is Wednesday 17th January 2024. We give thanks to God for it is the middle of the week! A wonderful day it is! Is someone surprised or shocked that they are alive today and reading this message? No one should be surprised. Each of us is alive on point and purpose. Our Creator knows everything concerning us and our lives and we believe that we have longer life to see and tell the whole wide world about God’s great deeds starting from where we are at the moment.

How do you feel today? How is your dear family? How are your relatives and friends? Work mates? Old boys and girls? Business partners? I hope and pray that everyone is well. I know for sure that there are some of us on the one hand who are one-hundred percent fine and some on the other hand who have been going through challenging, difficult or hard times. The condition may have taken quite some time or it just started a few minutes ago. My encouragement and prayer is that God is aware of your happiness as much as He is aware of the pains of life. He is God of all flesh and nothing is too hard for him. It is written in Jeremiah 32:26-28;

26Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 27 Behold, I am the Lord of all flesh. Is anything too difficult for me? 28Therefore this is what the LORD says: Behold, I am about to deliver this city into the hands of the Chaldeans and of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who will capture it.…

God’s plans are not to harm us but to give us a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11).

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

In all things, God works for good of those who love him and have been called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

We read and see from the cited text that Simon Peter was told to throw the net into the water. Of course, his human or carnal mind reminded him very fast that he had tried and failed to catch any fish. He therefore based on that to frown when the Master told him to do the same thing.

This week, we are called upon to stop relying on our past failures and negative experiences. We are asked and commanded to focus on the current message and instruction. There is power in trusting and obeying the voice of the Master; the voice of someone greater than us. You will appreciate the fact when this man, Simon Peter cast or threw the net into the water, the catch was amazingly huge.

What we learn from Jesus’ act of instructing Simon to cast the net is that the Master knows that it will work out according to His Will and Word. He is one hundred percent sure that His Word is secure and that it shall work out positively because He gets it from high above. I find this to be the same situation with us. Whenever we are confident about something, the people around us or within our circles will tell.

I speak into each of our lives that God will give us enough grace to listen and heed to His Word at all times. It might be painful to obey but when we do so, the benefits much more outweigh the disobedience and personal effort or wisdom.

Prayer:

Considering whatever may be surrounding each of us politically, economically and socially, I pray that God shall continue to work mightily in your life and in the lives of your loved ones. I pray that God shall give you and me abundant and healthy life so that we may serve Him to end of the ages. I pray that God shall protect and defend us from the hand and pans of the evil one(s). May God give wisdom to our leaders and Directors so that as we live, move and have our being, we shall be united in purpose and direction so as to advance together in all we do. To the glory, honor and praise of God, our Creator, amen.
