RWENZORI ANGLICAN YOUTH MISSIONERS (RAYM)

YOUTH SERVICE HELD ON SATURDAY 5TH DECEMBER 2020 VIA THE ONLINE/ZOOM PLATFORM

TOPIC: MENTORING A GODLY GENERATION

Speaker: Robert Mugisa Abwooli

Introduction

Praise God, again I say, praise God! He is worthy of all praise and honor at all times.

I thank God and the RAYM Youth Leadership through Rev. Isaac Mwandara for giving me and my family this opportunity to minister to us in this service. I know the times are very dynamic but like the Bible tells us in Mathew 24:14, the gospel of the kingdom must be preached the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. I am not sure how many of us are looking forward to that end that must come but I believe that it will come some day as we continue to wait upon the Lord.

About the topic: Mentoring a Godly Generation

When we talk of/about “mentoring a Godly generation, there are three key words that must be given deep thought i.e. “mentor/mentoring”; “Godly” and “Generation.”

To mentor is to advise or train someone, especially a younger colleague. Therefore a mentor is someone who advises, guides, trains or leads someone else who is in many cases younger in age or profession or any other area so that they too, grow to be like the one doing the mentoring.

Mentoring is to support and encourage people to manage their own learning in order that they may maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be. https://www.reading.ac.uk/engageinmentoring/what-is-mentoring/eim-definitions.aspx

“Godly” means having God in everything we do, be it speaking, moving, living and having one’s living.

A generation is "all of the people born and living at about the same time, regarded collectively." It can also be described as, "the average period, generally considered to be about 20–30 years, during which children are born and grow up, become adults, and begin to have children." https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=generation+meaning

Some Scriptures to Consider

Psalm 71:18

And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

2 Timothy 2:2

The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

Titus 2:3-4

Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children

Personal experiences and concluding comments

I have personally gone through a number of hands beginning with my parents to reach where I am but I must say that I have had very few mentors, if many, five. Jesus Christ has mentored me from the time I received him as Lord and Savior in 1996, as a young boy at Nyakasura School. Then the other person I have looked to and approached for mentorship is my current Executive Director at the work place, Ms. Margaret Sekaggya in relation to human rights defending and professional career. In the ministry of God’s Word, I have received some mentorship from Mr. Edson Baryaremwa Amooti and Bishop Reuben Kisembo Amooti.

Mentorship carries its own challenges but I may tell us today that we ought to always look at life from a positive angle and even while we sit/seat at the feet of our mentors, we have to believe within us that we can be the best we wish to be. Let’s always learn as much as we can and then use that knowledge to be better people – be transformed by the daily renewing of our minds.

Prayer:

Almighty God, thank you for mentoring us. Thank you for granting us the opportunity to mentor others. May you continue to give us sufficient grace to stand with courage to speak the truth at all times and to lead many into being like you, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
